The written test consists of 60 questions which are divided into 4 sections .The total duration of the test is 90 minutes. There is negative marking .

The sectionwise distribution of the questions is as follows:
Section#1
This section consisting of 15 questions is based on general computer awareness.
In this section: A correct answer carries 1 mark 1/4 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer.

Section#2
This section also consists of 15 questions. Questions based on C language are asked.
In this section: A correct answer carries 1 mark 1/4 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer.

Section#3
A total of 10 questions based on pointers and structures in C are asked in this section.You can also be asked one or two questions on JAVA also.
In this section: A correct answer carries 2 marks 1 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.

Section#4
This is the aptitude section consisting of 20 questions. Simple maths questions are asked which are very easy. The logical questions asked are similar to the ones given in the Barron's GRE book.
In this section: A correct answer carries 2 marks 1/4 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.

There are 4 levels

There are 4 levels –

APTITUDE TEST ( 1 hr 30 min )
It contains 2 sections –

a> 1st part 35 question.

Most of them are Logical reasoning, Coding, Data Interpretation

Percentage etc. It was not an easy one. But the easier problems are

situated at last. So it is best to find from where to start.

b> 2nd part 20 question.

Some questions that came are-

i. what is backpatcher

ii. language extension done by

iii. full form of SCSI

iv. tracing output ( 2 to 3 question )

v. no of links in a fully connected network of n nodes

vi. mutual exclusion implementation strategy

vii. function to pointer vs pointer to function

viii. in a given C function, for which line an error will be generated. Etc

Correct Ans -> 1 marks

Wrong Ans -> -1 marks

2 Group Disscussion

As only 157 student have been selected for the next round, they said “OK students, next round –TECHNICAL”

3. Technical held in 1: 1 ratio.

4. HR

It also held in 1: 1 ratio at first few hours then in 1: 5 ratio.

My first question was –

i. Tell me about ur family.

ii. Then he asked why I have 54% in graduation, while in all other cases over 80%.

iii. Why I have done B.Sc but not B.Tech

iv. Then why I am doing MCA

v. Why not TCS

vi. No of students who got over 60% in B.Sc under Calcutta University

vii. Next he said my technical score is okay, then why should he will hire me

viii. Tell me about HCL

ix. My strong points

x. My weak points

xi. What is uniq in me

xii. If I had any plan of higher studies

xiii. My opinion on reservation issue

xiv. Location preference

xv. If I am ready to sign bond

Next he says if I know JAVA, I said no sir, but I have JAVA in this sem.Then he said “I think we are going to select you. Study JAVA and be a master of it. Thank you Avik”

At 8 pm the result is out and I have been selected.

So this is my story and I hope I will see many of you working with me at HCL.
